FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions for

Magnolia Family Medicine Patients Transitioning Care to Dawson Med

Transitions in care can be overwhelming, especially during a time of loss. Find answers below to questions you may have as Dawson Med steps in to support your continued care.

  • Who is Dawson Med?

Dawson Med providers (established in 2021) share Dr. Gutsin’s approach to personalized, relationship-based care. Many team members knew Dr. Gutsin personally and have long respected the way he cared for his patients. Two providers — Jan Pixton, PA-C and Dr. Umar Bowers, MD — will be seeing the majority of former Magnolia Family Medicine patients at Dawson Med Primary Care located at 608 Dawson Street.

Dr. Bowers, an internal medicine physician with 12 years of primary care experience, founded Dawson Med in 2021. He shares Dr. Gutsin’s philosophy of relationship-based, personalized care. Like Dr. Gutsin, Dr. Bowers believes in delivering high quality care to the patients that he and his team serve.  Dr. Bowers attended medical school at Howard University College of Medicine, worked as a Research Assistant at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and completed his residency training at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.  Dr. Bowers’ wife, Tiffany, is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Wilmington-area native.

Dr. Bowers also plays an active role in public health policy and leadership across North Carolina.  He is the Chair of our region’s Health Talent Alliance, which is a collaborative venture between the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and the South East Area Health Education Center (SEAHEC) tasked with addressing workforce shortages in the health sector.  Additionally, Dr. Bowers invests heavily in the development of the next generation of healthcare leaders.  To this end, he is the Vice-Chair of UNCW’s College of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee working directly with the Dean and other stakeholders to shape the future and improve the educational experience of CHHS students.

Jan Pixton, PA-C, brings over three decades of experience and compassionate care to Dawson Med. She completed her Physician Associate training at Emory University in 1985 and has been a Certified Physician Assistant ever since, building a career focused on patient-centered primary care. Prior to Dawson Med, Jan spent more than 12 years serving patients at a local Wilmington clinic, where she earned a reputation for her warm, attentive approach and genuine commitment to her patients’ health and well-being.

Jan’s known for her warm, thoughtful approach and her commitment to going the extra mile—a value she wholeheartedly shares. Whether you’re managing chronic conditions, seeking preventive care, or navigating a new health concern, Jan is here to walk with you every step of the way.
