It is with great sadness that the Magnolia Family Medicine (MFM) Team announces the unexpected passing of our beloved founder, leader, friend, and physician, Dr. Richard Gutsin, on June 5, 2025.

Dr. G founded MFM in March of 2000. Many of our patients have been part of our family since its inception, and some even before, as he was a partner at Azalea Coast Internal Medicine here in town from 1995. Being a physician was his passion and purpose, and those who had the pleasure of spending time in his presence will remember him as a dedicated doctor, mentor, teacher, and friend. He wore his heart on his sleeve. His quips and sayings, sincerity, honesty, and committed diligence will never be forgotten.

After careful consideration and research, Dr. G has chosen to pass his professional torch to a dear friend and respected colleague, Dr. Umar Bowers, with whom he shares the same primary care philosophies and principles as MFM. He and his team focus on providing quality care with emphasis on getting to know the person behind the medical record. Speaking of that, we are pleased to announce that several members of the MFM staff plan to stay on the ship – so you aren’t through with us yet!

The goal is to have patient care resume in our office at 3720 Shipyard Blvd, but in the interim, appointments will be rescheduled to the Dawson Med Primary Care location. Acute medical needs can be addressed at Dawson Med Urgent care Monday-Saturday from 8 am – 6pm. Both locations are at 608 Dawson Street. Answers to frequently asked questions will be posted on our respective web sites; www.magnoliafmed.com and www.dawson-med.com

This is an unexpected and monumental loss, and there is sure to be a period of adjustment and mourning, but as a family, we will overcome any obstacles together. Dr. G left his mark on so many, and his passing was too sudden and too soon. While we do not have all the answers or details figured out yet, those will come in time, and as a team.

To honor Dr. Gutsin, please take care of yourselves to the best of your ability - continue going to your appointments, take your medications as directed, express your concerns and questions openly, and hug your friends and family a little tighter and a little more often.

With love from Suzi Gutsin, Staci, Laura, Melanie, and Roz, and with sadness yet warm welcome, his friend, Dr. Umar Bowers, his wife and partner S. Tiffany Bowers, and the team at Dawson Medical.
